Hello! I'm Hilary from Toronto, and I recently joined a bodybuilding/weight training gym near me. Everyone there is really nice, but they are all strong men and I'm a total beginner, so I've found it hard to keep up the motivation to go regularly. My goals are to be able to do full pushups on the floor, improve my upper body strength, and hopefully one day be able to do a pull up. Right now I can only do a few steep incline pushups before faltering and my upper body strength is dismal. I need to practice my form for squats and deadlifts before the guys at the gym will let me load a bar with any weight, so that's what I'm working on right now. The squat video/article was very helpful! I look forward to one on deadlifts So happy this site exists! H

A real pull-up is also a big goal of mine. Last year I couldn't do a full pushup either, what helped me more than anything was the plank. Maybe you can try it!

Inclined pushups are a great way to work your way into standard pushups! I second kristina 's idea about planks - they would certainly help with the core strength you need to execute a standard pushup with good form, which is half the battle. I'm glad the guys at the gym are looking out for you and making sure your form is good before putting weight on your back, that's so important to long term success and healthy lifting. Do you have a way to execute any sort of assisted pullups (machine, bands, training partners holding your legs)? So glad you're here!

Thanks for all the replies! There is a thing set up at the gym that can help with assisted pullups with bands, but I've been scared to try it. I will definitely start incorporating planks into my routine--my core definitely needs work.
